On an autumn day in 1951, 21-year-old salesman Erwin Müller opened his textiles wholesale business in Lauterbach, a small village in the German state of Swabia. In those days, "wholesale" meant not having a whole lot of space or facilities but having to operate in scarce space with simple facilities and engaging with customers in person in order to make those crucial "first contacts". Erwin used his father's old pre-war Opel P4 to get around. His portfolio might have been small but demand increased significantly as rebuilding got underway after the end of the World War II. One successful year was followed by another, and another. The company grew into a specialist mail order supplier with more than 500 committed and enthusiastic employees.
