It has adapted perfectly to the harsh Klima environment and has plumage with outstanding warmth and excellent insulating properties. It lines the nest with its down to protect the sensitive brood from the wind and cold. After the incubation period, the down is collected from the abandoned nest.
These downs are particularly large, light and soft. They have tiny little branches, so they interlock like a fleece. This creates air chambers, to which they owe their high heat retention capacity.
